Agarwal (eds.), Fertility Preservation: Emerging Technologies and Clinical Applications, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4419-1783-6_2, © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2012 Abstract Cancer survivors may wish to become parents, if they have lost their reproductive function, by using previously stored gametes or gonadal tissue. Fertility preservation serves such a wide range of medico-social circumstances, some quite unique, that patient care requires an individualized and multidisciplinary approach. In particular, fertility specialists offering fertility preservation options to cancer patients should be properly trained and knowledgeable to discuss patient’s treatment plan, prognosis, as well as unusual health risks for future offspring and the potential harmful effects of pregnancy. Overall, there should be no ethical objections to offer these services since they are offered with the scope of preserving future fertility. However, in practice, there are objections: many options are still experimental; posthumous use of stored tissue or gametes carries some legal issues; concerns exist about the welfare of offspring resulting from an expected shortened life span of the parent; concerns exist about the welfare of children born using gametes frozen after chemotherapy already started; and reseeding of cancer is possible after transplanting cryopreserved tissue.

Oncology nurses' perceptions of barriers to discussion of fertility preservation with patients with cancer.
Infertility is a common result of cancer treatment; however, opportunities exist for patients to preserve fertility prior to treatment. Recent evidence suggests that healthcare providers, including nurses, do not consistently discuss fertility preservation (FP) with patients. This qualitative, cross-sectional pilot study used a focus group and in-depth interviews to explore knowledge, attitudes...
متن کاملDiscussions about reproductive and sexual health among young adult survivors of cancer
Fertility preservation and sexual health are increasingly important as more young cancer patients survive their disease. Our aims were to describe the frequency with which reproductive and sexual health discussions occur, and to identify clinical factors associated with these discussions. Medical records of patients aged 20-39 diagnosed with solid tumors from 2008-2010 who survived ≥2 years wer...

Cancer treatment often results in reduced fertility. Cancer patients should be informed of options for fertility preservation and future reproduction prior to cancer treatment. Reproduction in the context of cancer raises a number of ethical issues related to both patient and offspring welfare.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy often result in reduced fertility, and patients receiving gonadotoxic treatment should be informed of options for fertility preservation and future reproduction prior to such treatment. Reproduction in the context of cancer also raises a number of ethical issues related to the welfare of both patients and offspring. This document replaces the document titled, ...
متن کاملEthics of fertility preservation for prepubertal children: should clinicians offer procedures where efficacy is largely unproven?
Young children with cancer are treated with interventions that can have a high risk of compromising their reproductive potential. 'Fertility preservation' for children who have not yet reached puberty involves surgically removing and cryopreserving reproductive tissue prior to treatment in the expectation that strategies for the use of this tissue will be developed in the future. Fertility pres...
